An American oil on canvas from around 1900 capturing a pair of swans in flight over a marsh, their wings raised mid-stroke against a sky streaked with soft blue and white cloud. The artist built the composition low and wide, letting the rust-colored reeds and still water carry the bottom half of the canvas while the birds cut across the open sky above. Signed lower left, "Arthur R. Eakin." The near swan's plumage is rendered feather by feather rather than as a flat silhouette. The painting sits in a giltwood frame in the Hudson River School style, with reeded moulding and carved corner rosettes that echo the period of the work itself.
