A Chinese betrothal basket with cover, hand-woven from dyed bamboo circa 1880-1910. The lid works through three layers of weave: a fine star-and-cross lattice bordering the rim, a honeycomb field of hexagon caning centered on small woven stars, and a tighter mesh beneath.
Below the lid, the weave spirals inward down the bowl toward the base, where free-floating copper coins and an embroidered medallion, worked in a red ground with a pink and white floral motif, sit at the center. Run a hand along the base and you can feel the coins inside the weave, a technique tied to basketry made by a community in Southwest China.

ORIGIN: China
PERIOD: 1880-1910
MATERIALS: Dyed bamboo, with copper coins woven into the base
