A beautifully rendered English tole tea tray, painted with an extensive chinoiserie landscape in gilt and bronze powder against a black lacquer ground. The rolled rim encloses a dense scene of pagodas, arched bridges, and figures moving through layered foliage, with mountains receding toward the back of the composition. Gilt work is heavier in the foreground plants and finer in the distant hills, giving the flat black ground depth. Enamel and lacquer carry the color throughout, with touches of red-orange picking out roof lines and architectural detail. Unusual and exceptional.
