American seascape in oil on academy board, "Romance of the Sea," by Leonid Gechtoff. The composition shows breaking surf over dark rock outcroppings under a pale, cloud-streaked sky, painted with heavy impasto brushwork in the waves and foam. It's signed and dated lower right, "L. Gechtoff '37," and titled and dated again on the verso, "Romance of the Sea by L. Gechtoff M.A.A. 1937." The frame is a wide, ribbed period giltwood frame. Gechtoff painted this a decade after settling in Philadelphia, following a path that took him from Odessa through Cairo, Holland, and Manila before he found his footing on the American coast.
