A Chinese export porcelain tankard, painted in the Mandarin Palette with polychrome enamels and gilt highlights. The twisted strap handle rises from a body wrapped in a continuous courtly scene: young women receive male visitors and attend to them in a garden setting, framed by an open pavilion with rose-latticed screens. A band of roses and butterflies edges the mouth rim, inside and out, in the same palette of pinks and greens that carries through the main scene. The underside has later Western marks.Â
