A pair of 1850s French faience plates, each hand-painted with a vegetable transfer bordered in ochre. One plate holds a full artichoke head, its leaves loosening at the base, ringed by trailing greens; the other plate, a bundle of scallions with roots still fanning out at the edge. Small beetles tucked into the foliage give both pieces the feel of a botanical study more than tableware, right down to the pull of a leaf mid-curl. Set them on a wall or let them sit out on open shelving; either way, each one rewards a closer look.

Marked "D2" on the underside with a small painted blue dot, likely a decorator or pattern mark rather than a factory stamp.

DIMENSIONS: 9" D x 1" D (each)
ORIGIN: France
PERIOD: 1850s
