A pair of English candelabra from the George III period, made around 1780-90 in Old Sheffield Plate, in the Neoclassical Adam taste popular in the last decades of the eighteenth century. Each has three lights on six-sided looped arms, their fluted tulip-form candle cups echoing the central cup on the same design.

The full armature lifts off, so each piece can be converted down to a single candlestick: a fluted tulip candle cup on a waisted post, over a tapering trumpet-form shaft with ring turnings, set on a fan-fluted circular base. That convertibility was a practical feature for eighteenth-century dining tables, allowing the table to be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

Visible on the base of each candelabra is an engraved griffin with wings spread. This was likely a family crest or herald.
