An American Federal mahogany shield back side chair, c. 1790-1810, in the Hepplewhite style, with five slender splats radiating from an inlaid half-round fan at the point of the shield.
The inlay is a light wood with fine radiating segments that reads against the red-brown mahogany. A fine incised line runs along the edges of the shield and the back posts. Below, the chair stands on straight, tapered square legs joined by an H-stretcher in the same wood as the frame. The seat is upholstered in a gray and cream ticking-style stripe.
The open, pierced back keeps the chair light in a room, so it sits easily at a desk, in a hall, or against a wall.
