A 19th-century Italian oil on canvas vedutina painting, capturing San Giorgio Maggiore across the Grand Canal. Gondolas and sailing vessels crowd the green water in the foreground, figures picked out in quick strokes of white and red against dark hulls. This composition is after an early 18th-century original, executed a century later. Look closely and you can pick out individual gestures in the boats - a gondolier mid-pole, sails catching the light off to the right.
