An American gouache view of the piers at Rockport, Massachusetts, by Emma Mendenhall (1873–1964), painted in the tonal, ochre-heavy palette associated with the Cincinnati School. She builds the harbor in warm umber and tan washes, setting weathered pier pilings and the town's fish house against a hillside of cottages and rooftops. The laid paper's texture shows through the thin gouache, giving the wet sand and water a grainy, sun-bleached quality.
